Ask Jane: Dealing with hair loss

Chloe from Bristol asks,

Jane, for around a month I’ve been losing hair.  Lots of hair.  Am I going bald?  What can I do to stop this?

If the hair loss is sudden and very drastic – you are starting to see bald patches – I would see a physician immediately.  Sudden hair loss can indicate disease or some other deficiency.  The sooner you see a doctor, the sooner you can get answers and start treatment.

If the loss is permanent, don’t fret.  There are many topical treatments that work beautifully to restore hair.  These have improved over the years.  I have a friend who lost most of hair through stress after her partner passed away.  Three years on, and after treatment with a Minoxidil formula, her hair is as luscious as it was when she was a teenager.

Bear in mind that hair can go through cyclical processes of shedding.  I myself go through at least one period a year where my hair starts falling out in massive amounts.  This will usually last around six weeks and then it will suddenly stop and then seems to grow back even thicker.

I’d see your physician as soon as possible.  And don’t fret.  Whatever the reason, there are solutions out there to help.
