As a photographer, I can assure you the “before” photographs you display are taken in harsh daylight and the “afters” taken with soft, ambient, flattering lighting. It’s more than makeup; it’s lighting and posture. The paparazzi shots are of women mostly taken unawares, and embarrassed about it. Nobody looks their best that way. All of the women in this column are beautiful without their makeup; these are just unflattering snapshots. You are insulting our intelligence and womanhood with this column.

I think that seeing stars without makeup is reassuring. I don’t think it’s mean. It makes the average person realize that stars aren’t perfect, and that anyone could be a star with the right makeup and lighting. It isn’t juvenile, mean, and it for sure doesn’t insult women’s intelligence.
And, for the most part (if the pictures had been taken expected and with smiles) these women are beautiful without makeup.

First off, people can’t be expected to look perfect in unflattering, sudden photos. The angles are bad, the lighting is bad. It would only be fair if they were at the SAME angle and the SAME soft lighting, with photos which they are PREPARED for and expecting. Truthfully, makeup does WONDERS and ANYONE can look as bad or as good as them. Also, the photos WITH makeup look like they’ve been retouched quite a lot. fair? I DONT THINK SO.

I think it’s good to show how the stars look without makeup, so girls can have something realistic to compare themselves to instead of the unrealistic, airbrushed photos young girls are often lead to believe are a realistic comparison, however, It is very mean-spirited to write negative comments about how these stars look without makeup, they are beautiful with and without makeup. Of course they’re not as tan as in their after shots, the lighting is TERRIBLE. Ever gone to the beach and wondered why everyone looks like ghosts in the blaring sun? Not to mention the fact that a lot of the before pictures are still quite pretty (Jessica Biel, Kim Kardashian). And, gee, does it take a genius to realize that when someone’s sweaty, partying, and doesn’t know a picture’s being taken, they’ll look a little bad? Miley deserves a bit of a break there.

this is a good website to show men that their dream women are just as ordinary as the rest of the world without all the glamor of make-up and sexy clothes. as for this being a bithcy site, not really it’s just a way to remind us that even celebrities have their better days just like us, so the next time we feel insecure that our men are ogling Kim Kardashian we also know that we too can be as beautiful with make-up on as she can look ordinary without it. A lot of these comments about the pictures are extremely rude. This kind of article is the exact reason why women feel they have to look their best all the time. Do you see men complaining about the lack of makeup, or if they have a hot body or a few curves? No, men couldnt hardly care less. I really am sick of women degrading themselves by setting standards for us to look like super models when underneath were all normal average people.
I hardly every wear makeup anymore because I am on a senior girls soccer team, I work in a resturaunt and doing lawn maintainance, and I really do not feel the need to wear makeup when its just going to run down my face and look like war paint.

Actually, I’m am very sorry but if this is not true but Miley looks like she may have been sick because her face is swollen therefore, I hope it doesnt contradict what I am about to say. I am aware that these actresses/models chose to be in the business and things like this are expected to happen but I’d like to find anyone that hasn’t had an off day. Hell, I wish I knew what it was like to get a make-over as often as they do. Could that be it, could you people who made this be jealous that they are often made to look stunning – who cares if they run around with no make up and their hair down, whatever the case might be…they are people to and if anything, they need these casual-sit-back-and-relax days more than anyone. Also I read a post from a black woman on an African American Entertainment forum and the topic was Angelina Jolie vs Halle Berry and a black woman said that Halle isn’t a very good actress but she’s gorgeous but that Angelina Jolie is *way* too skinny and looks like a fish in the face and is more hype than anything else.
And another African American forum a poster said she thinks Angelina has an ugly mouth,and another poster said her lips look like they belong on a fish. And another said she resembles a Trout because her eyes are too far apart & her lips are too big.
And on on a site FiringSquad men reviwed the trailer for Tomb Raider from 200-2002 & most said they think that Angelina is pretty ugly.

I was considered by most people to be a strikingly beautiful baby, child and teenager. Many strangers would come up to me and my parents and say what a gorgeous , beautiful baby and child. I never had big lips, I had /have normal size lips and a pretty delicate shaped mouth, and even as a baby and child I had high cheek bones, a small pretty shaped nose, an oval shaped face, very big dark brown beautiful deepset doe eyes , light skin, no freckles and red blonde hair that was much redder than strawberry blonde.
My mother was an artist and she went to art school and she even sold some of her sculptures in a few local galleries. She drew me in pastels when I was 5, she sculpted my face when I was 7 and she drew me in charcoal pencil which I sat for when I was 18.
She never drew or sculpted my sister who is 4 years older though and was only considered very cute and average pretty and who looks nothing like me.My sister has pretty shaped green eyes,average skin complexion,and medium brown hair.Most people just considered her a very cute average pretty child and teenager.
When I was a late teenager my mother said to me that people were so stupid,they would come up to me and say what a gorgeous,beautiful baby and child I was,and then they would say to my obviously jealous older sister,Oh your cute too.I once asked my mother when I was a late teen,if the department store photographers that she took my sister and to to have our portraits taken from the time I was born until I was only six,if any of the photagrapher’s ever said anything to her about what a beautiful baby and child I was,and she said yes they did,they said she’s really a beautiful baby and child,she really could model.I’m only 5/4 so I was never tall just average hight.
My mother saw people feature by feature as an artist and I once asked her if she thought a soap actress was pretty and she said, no she has an ugly nose, and she did, her nose was kind of flat and kind of spread out shaped.
I just know if she saw Angelina Jolie and I asked her if she thought she was pretty, she would have said no she has an ugly mouth with ugly huge fish shaped lips.
She also drew and sculpted a few black people and she never drew or sculpted anyone with huge ugly fish shaped lips.
Mick Jagger always really big lips,but they aren’t an ugly fish shape.

Those pictures aren’t mean at all. Either your a good looking person. or your not. it shouldn’t matter about the lightning, if your gorgeous (naturally) you will ALWAYS look gorgeous. Celebrities are at least 80% fake, fake boobs, chins, eyebrows, noses, butts and if they where a shit load of makeup- then it’s expected.

Think about it ladies.. how many women on average are considered naturally beautiful to the world? Not many.. BECAUSE of how society, magazines, celebrities, men, etc. have become so set on how a woman needs to rely on cosmetics to look and feel better. We grow up in this world believing it, too. Don’t you remember putting your mom’s makeup or lip gloss on when you were a little girl and how pretty it made you feel? Not only that feeling, but how much attention you got? Then come Jr. High and the girl wearing mascara was always the one getting attention from the cute boys, making other girls not feel so pretty and then it’s a chain reaction. If a girl has low self-esteem makeup might be a cover-up for her insecurities and because of people’s reactions, she wouldn’t want to show her face without makeup because then she’d be labeled as “UGLY”. We are no longer equal as women, we compete to look better than everyone else rather than do it for ourselves. Media tells us how skinny we should be, what we should wear, how to wear our makeup.. how we “NEED” makeup, trying to break us from our individuality and compete to look the best in the eyes of society. Why not do it for yourself if you want to do it? Our minds are so set on what we have been told from society that we criticize other women on their appearance. You see a fat girl running on a track on the side of the road, what do you think? Eww? Why not think at least she’s doing something for herself, instead. We’re programmed this way ladies, it is not our fault. Don’t rely on makeup to feel beautiful.. but don’t rely on other people to tell you you’re beautiful either. Be comfortable in your own skin and learn to love yourself naturally, the way you are. Re-assure yourself that you’re beautiful no matter what and that confidence alone will reflect your naturally beauty. Be a woman, a strong woman and change your way of thinking.. For we are beautiful inside and out, and we are all unique..
What I find really incredible is that this article is written in such a way as to say women NEED makeup. No one needs makeup and for thousands of year no one wore makeup. A beautiful woman is beautiful whether she is in full geisha makeup, she has had rings all around her neck since childhood, or is simply naked and bare or face and body. It’s so ridiculous to assume made-up faces are pretty. Girls are pretty. Not mascara.

Well, for one, I am thankful for these pics, even if they are concidered drastic by some. It’s like a reality check, I do forget how much editing magazines do. It’s nice to see beautiful women, and of course, we feel ugly by comparison, but it doesnt change the fact we like seeing them. They’re good for the eye and makes us dream of how lovely our life would be if we were beautiful.
I think it tells the ordinary girl that if she gets herself a great stylist she can rock that super star look, too.
Also, next time a hot chick looks down on my makeupless face I wont feel quite that bad thinking that maybe underneath that lovely face is someone just like me.

Yeah they don’t look that good compared to their pictures when they are on the red carpet. They are just people who don’t wear makeup every second of everyday. And they should be able to do that and not get pictures taken of them and them get put on the internet and called ugly. Websites like this are why i am never going to be famous. that and i am not going to look my absolute best all the time.

it’s a bit silly to compare skin colors like that, because those with makeup are made by professional photographers and they definately adjust the white balance, while others are shot with ordinary, low quality cameras, with poor zoom where white balance and exposure is uncontrolable.
at least the paleness and the color of the skin from these photos are not compareable… the rest ok.

Aw, this is not right. I think they all look pretty decent without makeup. None of us feel beautiful without makeup. The vast majority of us also know these women aren’t flawless and that all their photos are airbrushed. I think they are all beautiful and shame shame shame on the girls commenting on how people are ugly…Im sure they are entirely different people without their makeup, also.

I don’t think this article is mean in the least. I think it merely points out that these women who are considered incredible are just like us. The media – the constant images of ‘perfect’ airbrushed women cause so many ‘ordinary’ women to have low self esteem -w omen are always trying to attain that perfection they see in magazines – this article shows that that perfection doesn’t really exist – the images are as a result of good make up, stylists, and talented photographers.
I actually think that all the women above are all beautiful without make up – it all depends on personal taste. But yes – they do all look far more glamorous with make up on – it’s good that women can see this – and for men too to realise.

Look everyone I fully understand both sides of this argument, I mean who doesn’t want to feel better about their physical appearance, I know I do! However what we should all be doing is looking at people’s personalities for judging whether or not they are beautiful. After all we all end up old and eventually dead, the only thing that keeps us alive that little bit longer is our actions.
