Without makeup, big-screen celebs can look as drab as the rest of us on a supermarket run. One look at these pictures and you’ll wonder who stole their sizzle. But read on. Makeup artists for some of the world’s biggest beauty brands have put together step-by-step face charts that will take your face from wan to wow, just like your favorite star.

Sans makeup, Oscar winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow looks more like a hippie — OK, a rich Hollywood hippie — than a major movie star.

The mother of two is clearly comfortable in her (makeup-less) skin, but she knows how to turn on the shine for a night on the town, or a turn on the red carpet. (Of course, would you expect anything less from a spokeswoman for a makeup company?)

It’s all in the eyes — the surest way to capture Gwyneth’s movie star glam. Start by applying a creamy apricot from lid to crease, and blend a sapphire-charcoal from your lash line outwards on to the lid and outer “v” of the eye. Follow with a light smudging on the lower lash line. Complete with a shimmery white highlighter on the brow bone. Keep the rest of your face soft, luminous and neutral.
