The wonderful people at Clark’s Botanicals were kind enough to share some their lip treatments with me. In turn, I am sharing my first hand opinions of the offering with you.
First, I have to share the background story behind the brand. Clark’s Botanicals was born out of tragedy when company founder Francesco Clark suffered a crippling spinal cord injury in a swimming pool diving accident in 2002. With his central nervous system impaired, Francesco lost the ability not only to walk, but even to sweat, which led to chronic breakouts. With the help of his father, Dr. Harold Clark, they created the botanically-based formulas that quickly gained a huge following including celebrities and countless magazines including Vanity Fair, People, In Style, W, Allure and Vogue.
The packaging is simple, organic and reminds you of those basics that create the standard to which you set your beauty routine. With all tubes of lip treatments, I begin with squirting a small amount onto toilet paper. Due to shipping, packaging or simply sitting on shelf (however briefly) I find most glosses settle and I am treated to a glop of oil before the pigment surfaces. Perhaps it was out of superior formula or luck, but no greasy glop greeted me. Instead, a richly pigmented gloss gently oozed out.
I tried the shade named after Madonna herself, “Madge Mauve.” The icon received the honor of being an inspiration after she took the time to call Francesco after his accident. He didn’t forget the kindness and let her become a muse for the day to night tone. It is more darker complexion friendly, but sheer enough anyone can pull it off.
The plumping action isn’t as abrasive as some lip treatments tend to be. It was a gentle tingle that was refreshing. I appreciated the sheer color. With my fair tone, some tints can be too bold. I feared the typical pale lavender-lilac hue that normally comes with a mauve, but this was far warmer and complimented my brown hair.
