The Dip Dye Hair Trend

Being a child of the 80’s, I adored Lady Lovely Locks, Rainbow Brite and She-Ra. Those fictional creations were my heroes, but today kids are far more forward.

Experimenting has led to a style progression that has rocking a full head of magenta hair a norm on the street. In fact, it’s become old hat.

The new trend is dip dye. Nicki Minaj, Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne, Demi Lovato, Drew Barrymore, Rachel Bilson and Ashley Greene cover all age ranges, creeds and backgrounds while rocking the tipped trend.

Keep in mind that these women are also pop stars and celebrities trying to be style pioneers. Rock it at your own risk.

To score the look for a day, try Color Bug by Kevin Murphy. The temporary color washes out instantly and is incredibly easy to use. The video below will give you step by step instructions and tips. It works like an eye shadow for your hair.

If you are looking for a more permanent look, you will need to lighten the ends of your hair if you aren’t already blonde. Grab some Manic Panic Semi-Permanent Hair Color Cream and start dipping. The semi-permanent dye is conditioning, but I’d still give your locks a day of rest if you had to lighten first.

Test your strands. If they are strong and NOT elastic, you are good to dye. Wash your hair with a deep cleansing shampoo, towel dry thoroughly, use small amounts to work through the ends of your selected strands by combing through until the cream is frothy, wait 30 minutes and then rinse. Done!

Hot Tip: To make the look last, use cool water every time you shampoo and condition.
